It appears that the Kent State search for a head coach may be coming to an end according to a published report by FootballScoop.com. AD Joel Nielsen may be close to hiring Syracuse co-offensive coordinator Sean Lewis according to the report, filling the vacancy left by the departure of Paul Haynes several weeks ago.
Lewis was part of Dino Babers' staff both at Syracuse as well as at Bowling Green and Eastern Illinois and is considered to be one of the young rising coaches in the industry.
The reported new head coach played his college football at Wisconsin and also served as a GA at fellow MAC school Akron. Lewis was recognized as a nominee for the 2015 Frank Broyles Award, an award that goes to the nation's top assistant coach.
Lewis' duties as co-OC at Syracuse were focused around the passing game and the Orange were No. 18 in college football in passing offense with almost 295 yards per game with Lewis overseeing the throw game. Syracuse went on to upset CFP semifinalist and No. 1 seed Clemson earlier this season.
If these reports hold on to be true, Lewis will inherit a program that needs a fair amount of work. Kent State finished 2-10 this past season and ranked No. 127 in total offense and No. 123 in passing offense.
There will be no easy welcome to the Golden Flashes moment for Lewis as Kent State opens its regular season at Illinois and also has road games at Penn State and Ole Miss on the schedule in the month of September.
We will have more on this developing situation and more news becomes available.
