The Paul Haynes-era at Kent State is reportedly coming to a close as multiple sources, including a first report by Football Scoop, have reported that the 48-year-old coach has been relieved of his head coaching duties.Haynes put together a record of 14-45 while the head coach at Kent State after he replaced Darrell Hazell.
The 2017 Golden Flashes went just 2-10 this season with wins against Howard (Division I-FCS) and Miami (Ohio). Haynes' teams struggled in MAC play with just a 9-30 record during his tenure with the team.
Haynes missed the start of the season after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer and was not with the team in their loss to Clemson to start the year. He did make his return in time to see his team defeat Howard, 38-31 in week two.
The now departed head coach was a Kent State alum who played defensive back from 1987-1991 and was on his second stop with the Golden Flashes after a two-year run as defensive backs coach and then assistant head coach in 1999-2000.
Hazell would then go on to stops with Jacksonville in the NFL as well as Louisville, Michigan State, Ohio State and Arkansas in the college ranks before rejoining Kent State in 2013 to fill the vacant head coaching job.
Kent State never finished better than 5th in the MAC East under Haynes and the best record his teams put together was a 4-8 run in 2013. Beyond that season the team never won more than three games on the regular season or two in conference play.
