Despite falling just short in their bid to win their first conference championship since 1972, the Golden Flashes received the news tonight that they will be heading to their first bowl game since the now defunct Tangerine Bowl that season. Kent State will be heading to Mobile (Ala.) and the GoDaddy.com Bowl to take on Arkansas State of the Sun Belt conference on January 6th, 2013.
While the taste of Friday night's disappointment is still fresh in their mouths, head coach Darrell Hazell has done the best he could to refocus his football team for the road ahead. Despite the news that Northern Illinois, who defeated the Golden Flashes 44-37 on Friday night will play in the BCS Orange Bowl, Hazell's hopes are that his team will consider this season for what it has been: a success.
""Our guys will be extremely excited to be traveling to a bowl. They will continue to work extremely hard to be ready to go," the second year head coach said. "For now, we want them to rest for a few days. They'll get a lift in on Tuesday and we'll practice Wednesday."
The Red Wolves, coached by former Auburn assistant Gus Malzahn, won the Sun Belt Conference this year with a 9-3 record overall (7-1 Sun Belt), won their second straight Sun Belt title en route to Mobile and have done it in impressive fashion. In their final regular season game, the Red Wolves hung a goose-egg on Sun Belt foe Memphis 45-0 in their final regular season game to earn the conference title.
Kent State won a program record 11 games this year, and will look to become the fourth straight MAC team to win the GoDaddy.com bowl. The game will kick-off at 9pm on January 6th.
