ROSLYN, Pa.--Kent State junior running back Eugene Jarvis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was named to the 2008 Watch List for the 72nd Maxwell Award on Monday (June 30). The Maxwell Award has been presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell.
The nation's leading returning rusher, Jarvis gained a school-record 1,669 yards on the ground in 2007--shattering the old mark by more than 300 yards. His 139.1 rushing yards per game ranked fifth in the country and first in the MAC. The first team All-MAC pick scored 13 total touchdowns (10 rushing, 3 receiving) on his way to compiling 1,975 all-purpose yards, which was good for second in school history.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced in early November before being narrowed to three finalists on Nov. 25. The winner of the 2008 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December. The formal presentation of this award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah's Entertainment Atlantic City on March 6, 2009.
The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club's Selection Committee and the Maxwell Club reserves the right to make additions and subtractions to these lists as the 2008 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA Sports Information Directors, head coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for these awards.
