KENT, Ohio- Kent State wide receiver Antwan Dixon has been granted a sixth year of eligibility and will play for the Golden Flashes in the 2020 season as announced by the NCAA.
"I am really excited about the outcome for Antwan," head Coach Sean Lewis said. "He was one of the first individuals we learned about when we arrived at Kent State and to have him and his energy for another season is great. I am excited to see what the future holds for him and the rest of the team this fall!"
Dixon missed both the 2016 and 2017 seasons battling aplastic anemia, a rare blood disorder that causes a deficiency of all blood cell types. Dixon received a bone marrow transplant from his father and recovered in time for the 2018 season. He went on to lead the team in receptions with 52 and scored a touchdown in his first game back against Illinois. He was named the Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year for his efforts.
In 2019, Dixon played in all 13 games, finishing with 34 catches for 333 yards. He closed the season with a flourish, recording a season high 99 yards and a touchdown in Kent State's victory over Utah State in the Tropical Smoothie Café Frisco Bowl.
"We are thrilled to get Antwan back for another year!" offensive coordinator Andrew Sowder said. "He provides leadership and experience in our receivers' room and to the rest of our team. He has overcome a lot of adversity to become the player he is today. We are looking forward to what he accomplishes during his senior year."
Dixon has also used his platform to raise awareness about rare diseases. The wide out was named to the Uplifting Athletes Champion Team in 2019 after being a finalist in 2018. Uplifting Athletes works with college football players to raise awareness about rare disease research. Their annual "lift for life" raises money for the cause.
Antwan and the Golden Flashes are set to play at Penn State to open the 2020 season on September 5th. A kick-off time has not been announced.
