Chris Tremblay drew a walk to lead off the game for Kent State and moved to second on a Doug Sanders single. Andrew Davis then blasted a three-run homer to center field for an early 3-0 Kent State lead.
The Golden Flashes (11-16) weren't done. Brad Winter drew a walk and Greg Rohan singled followed by an RBI single by Anthony Gallas. Rohan would score on a sacrifice fly by Jared Bartholomew and Kent State led 5-0 after the top of the first inning.
The Vikings (5-21) tied things up in the bottom of the second.
Nate Radtke was hit by a pitch from Kent State starter Alan Morrison to start the inning and four consecutive Vikings singled before a Ryan Baechel triple cleared the bases and tied the score at five.
Cleveland State added a run in the bottom of the third for a 6-5 lead and both teams scored three runs in the fourth.
Tyler Martin drew a leadoff walk for the Flashes and Tremblay singled. Both runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Sanders and Martin scored on a single by Winter. Tremblay then scored on a wild pitch and Davis, who was intentionally walked, scored on a Rohan sacrifice fly.
The Vikings used two hits and a Kent State error to push three runs across the plate in the bottom half of the inning and led 9-8 after four. They added one in the fifth and Rohan homered in the top of the sixth to cut the Viking's lead to 10-9.
In the eighth, Davis walked and Winter homered to left center to give the Flashes a 11-10 lead, their first advantage since the first inning.
That lead was shortlived as the Vikings sealed the victory with four runs in the bottom of the eighth.
John Westra was hit by a pitch from Chris Carpenter and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rich Ranells. He took third on a passed ball. Carpenter then struck out Marc Sikora for the second out of the inning but the next four Cleveland State hitters reached base safely.
By the time the final out of the inning was recorded, the Vikings reclaimed the lead and held on to win, 14-11.
Both teams recorded 11 hits and had two fielding errors.
Carpenter took the loss for Kent State. Pat McKitrick picked up the win for the Vikings.
Davis finished the day 2 of 3 with three runs scored and three RBI. The home run was his fifth of the season.
The Golden Flashes travel to Penn State on Wednesday to close out a five-game road trip. They host Northern Illinois this weekend.
