Report: Haynes set to be named next head coach

The Kent State Golden Flashes have been looking for a head coach for close to two weeks and on Tuesday it appears that the search will be over after the school called for a 2:30pm press conference to announce a new head coach.

KentStateReport.com has learned that the likely successor to Darrell Hazell will be former Golden Flash player Paul Haynes. Haynes is no stranger to Kent (Ohio) after walking on to the football program in 1987 and played for four years. During his freshman season he led the team in interceptions and then went on to lead the team in tackles during the next season.

Haynes most recently was the defensive coordinator at the University of Arkansas after spending several years as the defensive back coach at Ohio State. Haynes has had stops at Michigan State, Louisville, Northern Iowa, Ferris State and Bowling Green to go along with his previous jobs. He also spent one year in the NFL as the Quality Control coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Haynes has not had any head coaching experience and Kent State will be his first job. He was named the transitional coach at Arkansas before the elevation of John L. Smith to head coach. Haynes stayed on for the 2011 season but was not offered the head-coaching job when Bret Bielema was brought in from the University of Wisconsin to lead the Hawgs.

Hazell will still be the head coach of the Golden Flashes through the bowl game but the university will apply for (and likely receive) an exemption from the NCAA that will allow Kent State to have two staffs for the short term before Hazell joins Purdue full time after Kent State's bowl game.

We will have more on this breaking news on Tuesday as Kent State names its next head coach.
