For Flash fans, the Kent-Akron game is the biggest game of the year for two reasons. First, it's the battle for the Wagon Wheel and second, it's the rivalry of supremacy in the recruiting battle for Northeastern Ohio recruits. But the Kent-Ohio game is different for me because I have always had strong feelings for both schools. As a boy growing up in Southeastern Ohio and Columbus, I fell in love with Ohio University but later changed my allegiance to Kent State. Perhaps Ohio is considered more of a rival to Kent in basketball than football but they have battled each other on the gridiron for 60 consecutive years. Ohio has been a charter member of the Mid American Conference since 1946 and Kent State became a member in 1951. Just as in past years, this game is played at a critical time during the season, when a win builds momentum but a loss tends to be followed by another loss that ends any aspirations for winning a conference championship or a MAC East title. Because both schools have a large number of its students from the Cleveland area, a win grants bragging rights to the victors for at least another year. To some students and alums the game has considerably less meaning but to others like myself the Kent-Ohio gridiron battle is the rivalry of the heart. It typically is the heart of Kent's football schedule. It is in the heart of autumn. And, it should be in the heart of every Golden Flash football supporter and in the heart of every player. I realize Akron is the game that Flash fans look forward to the most but on Saturday, my heart will be emotionally involved more than for any other game this season. It has always been that way for me and tomorrow will not be any different.
Go Flashes!!!
