"I think this game gave them some confidence that they can close out a game and they'll need that confidence in what I consider to be a season-breaking game on Saturday at Ohio. Win and the Golden Flashes become one of three favorites in the East; lose and it's probably lights out."
Steve, I agree with your assessment and believe that Coach Martin and his staff will have to mentally prepare the team before it goes out to play the Ohio Bobcats this Saturday. Some coaches are successful in inspiring their teams to play to the highest level. In the video below, you will see Coach Ed Burke, the legendary high school football coach who retired in 2006 after leading Torrey Pines to a 182-60-4 record with eight league championships and four CIF San Diego Section titles, give his team one of the best inspirational speeches that I have ever heard. In his speech, Burke says the following:
"...You have got to have a fire in your belly that tells you I want to be there in the worst way. You can't be quiet. You can't be unemotional. This is an emotional game!!! An emotional game. And we got to have it from the heart. We got to play with heart tonight guys. Now, you guys all understand what last play means? Last play. You play every play as if it was the last play you will ever play and if we don't play with emotion, if we don't play the last play on every play it will be. There won't be a next week. Every play tonight. You play, you think about what that means!!! You think about what it means to be on your last play. This is my last football play ever!!! My last play!!! How do I want it to be? How do I want to be remembered? My last play!!! Every play!!!"
When viewing this video, I get emotional to the point of tears. If you have already seen this video then you will be pleased to see it again and if you haven't had the opportunity to view it, I am certain that you will truly enjoy it.
Let's hope the Flashes play each play as if it was the last play they will ever play.
Go Flashes!!!

My husband gave very similar speeches to all his pop warner teams for years. That speech sure brought back memories. Getting the kids to believe in the team and program(even though it was just pop warner)was very successful, we went 25 games undefeated over a two year period. Some of those kids went on to play for ASU,BYU and others. Some are now in the pros. I hope Coach Martin can be inspiring and get his team to play to the highest level like you said. I've said before though I don't think Coach Martin is a "players coach".
