Spencer Keith will replace Giorgio Morgan, who suffered a sprained ankle against Coastal Carolina and reinjured it again against Boston College. Morgan practiced well on Wednesday and showed little sign of injury, but with Mid-American Conference play starting next week, Coach Martin decided to give his starter some rest.

As long as Kent's offensive line gives Keith time to throw, I believe he will perform well throwing in the pocket or on the run. Andre Flowers will also contribute greatly in the backfield.

Go Flashes!!!

I am looking for Spencer to have a good showing. He is very smart.

I coached Spencer in high school so I may be slightly biased but he is as intelligent a young man as you could have at QB. He will do a fine job on Saturday because he will be mentally and physically prepared as he was for every game in high school. He is one of those kids that just finds a way to win games. I know it is a much faster game in college but he will adapt quickly. You couldn't ask for a better freshman QB in my opinion.

Go Flashes!

Thanks for that insight and it confirms everything I have heard. I would not be surprised if Spencer does well enough that it may be difficult to supplant him. I really like his presence on the field and I have only seem him once.

i was at the game, and Keith looked good. threw with good touch when he needed to, and also threw with authority. Martin is going to have a really tough decision coming up next game, if Morgan is healthy. because he now has two good QB's that can play.

also Dri Archer played really well. he basically another Jarvis.

I thought Spencer played extremely well too. He threw the ball down the field with precision and timing. The best part is, he has played a little over one game in college so he will get much better very quickly as he gets used to the college game. He hates losing so he will not appreciate how well he played. I hope Coach Martin continues to give him some time when Morgan comes back. I wish they would also take advantage of his ability to throw the ball down the field and use the middle like they did at times. I think that would open up the run game and the play action that they like to use.

Hate that the flashes lost. Next week it becomes more important as conference play begins. Hope they can rebound.

I really liked what I saw of Keith. Great performance for a true freshman. I really liked how he stepped up in the pocket as he felt the pocket collapsing. He's going to be a very good player for us.

Congrats on your article in Sports Illustrated. Spencer seems like a bright young man with good football savvy and great skills, the next 4 years should be interesting.

I will buy that observation!

Polish-Hammer, thank you. It was kind of neat for the writer to come down and visit and watch a game just for an article. He was a very nice guy.

Coachesplays, I am sure you are not surprised by the success of Keith. Do you have anymore diamonds in the rough, that you can send to Martin and staff? Do you know of any other players at schools in your area that you could recommend to Martin and staff? Maybe you have already done these things, just curious?

Posted on 10/27 9:25 AM | IP: Logged

rjwagner,

I don't think Kent State recruits in Arkansas very much. I would love to send some kids up there though. I had the perfect kid that graduated with Spencer that ran for 1000 and had a 1000 yards receiving that isn't playing anywhere.

I will certainly recommend some if asked from my school or another school that we have played. Spencer seems to really like it there and that is good enough for me.

Posted on 10/27 7:56 PM | IP: Logged

Start a pipeline! I'm sure Doug Martin wouldn't mind you shooting him an email.

Posted on 10/27 8:00 PM | IP: Logged

He could always walk on and try to earn a scholarship. You should have Spencer start the dialogue with Coach Martin after the season.

Posted on 10/28 10:50 AM | IP: Logged

Is he better than who they have now that is all that matters.

Posted on 10/28 12:14 PM | IP: Logged

Really? So we should only recruit high school kids that are better than our 5th year seniors? Hope Notre Dame and Florida don't mind us stealing their recruits away.

Posted on 10/28 6:38 PM | IP: Logged

No I am just saying if he is not playing football there is a reason. Plus are RB's look good right now. I spoke with a recruiter from Kent once and Kent Roosevelt had a great QB and I said why not offer him and I quote "he is no better than the players or recruits we have now"

Posted on 10/28 9:29 PM | IP: Logged

Kent Roosevelt's quarterback, Dave Rogers, was just OK.

He's now at Youngstown State, as a tight end. He has started four games. He has 5 catches for 38 yards.

Posted on 10/28 9:46 PM | IP: Logged

Yeah, I remember him, good arm, but very slow, inaccurate, played against mediocre competition and ran the offense from the shotgun exclusively. Not surprised he was moved to tight end and is not having a ton of success.

Steve, on a side note, is Denerio Bryant, WR/DB from Kent Roosevelt, off of D1 recruiters radars, after he suffered a knee injury in the middle of his senior year and didn't attend many summer camps to get his name out there??

Posted on 10/28 10:48 PM | IP: Logged

That is what I am saying a great high school player is not necessarily a great college player. Good Call Steve that is exactly who I was talking about. I love the kids they are bringing now they seem to be able to contribute right off the bat with minimal work which is what Kent needs.

Posted on 10/28 11:21 PM | IP: Logged

You do realize howrecruiting works right? Every team wants to bring in players that have an instant impact with minimal work no matter what school or level you are at. Getting kids of that caliber to commit isn't that easy. It's not like Kent State didn't go after these type of kids saying we'll settle for second best and 5 year projects and only now said we'll get kids in here that are on the verge of BCS talent.

Posted on 10/29 4:46 PM | IP: Logged

No I actually do not know how recruiting works considering I coached college football. I am just saying you base your recruiting on the talent you currently have on your roster. Kids who are worth the investment of a scholarship are ones that you would like to contribute within two years. Why does everyone take what I say out of context! We obviously are not going to get BCS recruits, but they still need to get the job done once they are in the system.

And another nice article on your team/program in my paper this morning, way out in Central PA. I'm guessing it must be a syndicated AP article, called "Taking a pass on punting works".
