March 11, 2012KENT, Ohio - After a third loss to rival Akron, Kent State has accepted an invitation to play in the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The Golden Flashes will take on the Atlantic Sun Conference's University of South Carolina Upstate this Thursday night in the Palmetto state.
For the Golden Flashes (21-11, 10-6 MAC) it is their second trip to the CIT, the first coming in the inaugural edition of the event in 2009. In 2010 and 2011 Kent State participated in the NIT, winning three postseason games and advancing to the NIT quarterfinals last year.
After winning only 20 games the last three seasons combined, the Spartans (21-11, 13-5 A-Sun) have been one of the season's biggest turnaround stories, and the school's trophy case has the hardware to prove it. Torrey Craig, who averaged 16.8 points per contest and just under 8 rebounds a game was named Player of the Year; coach Eddie Payne was named Coach of the Year, and freshman Ty Greene, with his 11.2 PPG earned the Freshman of the Year award.
Kent State and South Carolina Upstate have never played, but the teams are very similar in style and pace and that should make for an exciting game for fans of both teams. USC Upstate averages 71.8 points a game and allows 68.7, while Kent State is putting up 70.6 a night, giving up 65.4.
The full CollegeInsider.com Tournament bracket will be revealed after the NCAA field is announced on Selection Sunday.
